E. Louis Schuette January 06, 1921 - August 11, 2009 E. Louis Schuette, 88, of Central Avenue died at 9:36 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009, at Columbus Regional Hospital. Mr. Schuette was a graduate of St. Peters Lutheran School and a graduate of Columbus High School. He was a lifelong member of St. Peters Lutheran Church. His first place of employment was Vorwalds Grocery Store in downtown Columbus. In April of 1946 he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Coast Guard. Being entrepreneurs, he and his wife opened Schuettes Laundry in Columbus, which was the first self-service laundry east of the Mississippi River. He became a fixture at the Bartholomew County 4-H Fair and other community events selling cotton candy and snow cones for over 50 years. In 1961 Mr. Schuette began working for the Indiana State Highway Department. Following eight years there, he worked for Ashland Oil Company in the Permit Department until his retirement. He was very active in local and state politics through much of his life and served on the Bartholomew County Council. He was a member of St. Peters Couples Club and the American Legion. Mr. Schuette became very adventurous in his later years, enjoying parasailing, a hot air balloon ride, an ultra-lite flight, riding on a Harley motorcycle, and riding in an Indy car. He also enjoyed watching Indy car races and was a huge NASCAR and Tony Stewart fan. Born in Columbus Jan. 6, 1921, Mr. Schuette was the son of Christian W. and Emily May Shireman Schuette. He married Norma Jean Vorwald Dec. 27, 1942. She preceded him in death Nov. 25, 2006. Survivors include sons, Donald (Marcia) Schuette of Green Pond, S.C., and Roger (Julie) Schuette of Columbus; daughters, Carolyn Schuette of Milwaukee, Wis., Dianne (Ron) Shepherd-Hargraves of Columbus; a sister, Cornelia Cunningham of Knoxville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Shannon Ray (Christina) Schuette, Tim Schuette, Tony (Kim) Schuette, Rodney (Jenny) Schuette, Damian (Vanessa) Shepherd, Chad (Nikki) Schuette, Joshua (Stephanie) Shepherd and Scott (Kelly Diekhoff) Schuette; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a great-granddaughter, Anna Mae Schuette; and a brother, Frank Schuette. Funeral Information Calling: Will be Sunday, August 16, 2009, from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home. FUNERAL: Will be Monday, August 17, 2009, at 10 a.m. at St. Peters Lutheran Church with calling one hour prior to service time at the church. BURIAL: Will be in Garland Brook Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard. Mr. Schuette was a graduate of St. Peters Lutheran School and a graduate of Columbus High School. He was a lifelong member of St. Peters Lutheran Church.
