Elma Rita Hoover, 92, of Columbus, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2026.
Rita was born on November 3, 1933, in Sand Creek, to the late Loren Ray and Laura Marie (Davis) Hooten. She married the love of her life, Tilford Hoover, on July 24, 1982; he preceded her in death on February 22, 2022.
Rita worked at General Electric in Shelbyville and later as a CNA at the Columbus Convalescent Center. Her caring nature led her to a career in home healthcare, where she touched many lives. Although raised Baptist, she and Tilford became devoted members of Elizabethtown Methodist Church.
Known for her independence and occasional sass, Rita was always straightforward and genuine. She and Tilford enjoyed traveling, visiting flea markets and garage sales, and dining out. Rita had a special gift for creating magical Christmas memories, decorating her home with love and attention to detail. A consummate homemaker, her home was always welcoming and beautifully maintained. She will be remembered for her humor, generosity, and heartfelt care for others.
In addition to her parents and Tilford, Rita was preceded in death by her daughter, Donna Hargrave, and siblings William Hooten, Gene Hooten, Don Hooten, and Claren Stillman.
Rita is survived by her children Dale Moore, Debbie (Terry) Blaney, Pam (Bill) Bailey, and Peggy Hoover; siblings Fran Baker, Le Ann Biehle, and Lu Ann Stevens; grandchildren Kyra Stier, Derek Moore, Morgan Olson, Peyton Olson, and Latasha Hoover; great-grandchild Gwendolynn; and a large extended family including nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In accordance with Rita’s wishes, private services were held at Jewell–Rittman Funeral Service & Crematory. Burial took place at Garland Brook Cemetery in the Garden of Faith, with Pastor Lonny Goen and Mr. Matt Buzzard officiating. Share a memory or sign the online guest registry at www.JewellRittman.com.
