November 28, 1956 ~ April 6, 2022

Edward John Hudecek, 65, of Columbus, passed away April 6, 2022, at his home. He was born Nov. 28, 1956, in Waterloo, Iowa, the beloved son of John and Mary Ann (DeWalle) Hudecek. Ed’s goal in life was to provide for his family the same way his parents had. He achieved that through a career in manufacturing and management. A graduate of Columbus East High School and Ball State University, he started his career at Cosco right after college and worked at several companies, retiring in February from Honda America in Greensburg. At BSU, Ed studied political science and secured a college internship with Robert D. Garton, former State Senate Pro Tempore. He was elected Columbus Township Trustee in 1989 and served two terms. In that role, he oversaw the office that provides fire protection and emergency relief to poor clients. Ed loved Indy Car racing, history, basketball, golf, and goofing around with his cherished granddaughters. He was a long-time member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council 1414, and the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks. Ed is survived by his devoted wife of 37 years, Cindy; his mother, Mary Ann; daughter, Kristin (Stephen) Shipley; a son, Michael Hudecek; a brother, Eric Hudecek (Kim Shipley); two sisters, Karla Hudecek (Malcolm Moran) and Kellie (Mark) Gallerani; and granddaughters, Mary and Frances Sparks. He was preceded in death by his father, John, in 2014. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 11, 2022, at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church 1306 27th Street with Fr. Chris Wadelton celebrating. Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the USO or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana through the funeral home.

  1. Ed was a good guy, glad to have known him over the years. He was always happy to catch me up on his family. He will be missed.

  2. Ed was the best neighbor ever! He always felt like a family member that lived next door. We loved the way he played with the kids, helped us with everything in the yard or the house and shared his gourmet meals hot off the grill. We were blessed to have Ed, Cindy, Kristen and Michael in our lives during those years.

What a lovely photo tribute to Ed. There is no mistaking that big happy smile! All of those photos speak volumes to the great family man that was Ed Hudecek.

Much love to the family. We send our deepest condolences and prayers for peace during your time of grieving. Ed will be sadly missed; he left us with many wonderful memories.

  3. Ed was a great friend, roommate and partner in many pranks and activities over the years. We attended somewhere between 25 & 30 Indy races together and I will never forget the trip we made to Key Largo after graduation from Ball State. His family was always very welcoming to me from my college days on. Ed was a guy the would do anything for a friend and was always a great blessing to me. Even after long spells when we didn’t see each other, we would start up again as though no time was missed. I will miss his humor and self deprecating nature but most of all his companionship and friendship. He has beaten me to the gates of heaven but when I get there I’m sure we will rejoice together. Rest in peace old friend and most sincere condolences to Cindy and all of Ed’s family.

  4. Thoughts and prayers to you, Cindy and Kristen and Michael during this time. May the memories of all the good things and love and fun you shared as a family carry you through those difficult days.
