Elmer Eugene Gene Smith, 90, of Chestnut Street died at 6:43 p.m. Monday, March 16, 2009, at Columbus Regional Hospital.
A member of Garden City Church of Christ, Mr. Smith had been a dairy farmer and substitute mail carrier in Lawrence County and retired from Dayton Tire and Rubber Company in Ohio. He loved to work outdoors, gardening and all sports.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge, the Elks Lodge and Junior Chamber of Commerce in Bedford and was a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge No. 161 in Leesville.
Born in Crete, Ill., March 12, 1919, Mr. Smith was the son of Stacy Elmer and Altha Meadows Smith. He married Martha L. Wiley Dec. 12, 1938.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Sondra (Edwin) Umphress, Susan (Dean) Emerson and Shelley (Matthew) Dawicke, all of Columbus; sisters, Bette Cronin of Arizona, Mary Alice Voyles and Gayle Howe, both of Columbus; grandchildren, Lisa (Mike) Lovins, Tammy (Steve) Fannin, Tony (Tammy) Murphy, Teri Jackson, Wiley (Lisa) Umphress and Maria (Joel) Doyle; and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral Information
FUNERAL: 1 p.m. Friday, March 20, 2009 at Garden City Church of Christ with the Revs. Virgil Clotfelter and Ron Voss officiating.
VISITATION: 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church and from noon until service time Friday.
ENTOMBMENT: Garland Brook Cemetery Mausoleum.
