Ernest M. Murphy, 87, of Elizabethtown, died at 3:25 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010, at Columbus Health & Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Murphy graduated from Waldron High School. He was a farmer and retired Reliance Electric machinist and had been a member of Elizabethtown Christian Church and Farm Bureau since 1948.
He enjoyed stock car racing, gardening, coon hunting and woodworking along with garden-tractor pulling and watching Purdue basketball games.
His greatest love was his family.
Born in Bartholomew County Feb. 22, 1923, Mr. Murphy was the son of Shirley and Lena V. Lambert Murphy. He married Vera Joan Nigh Feb. 22, 1948. She survives.
Also surviving are sons, Donald O. (Terry) Murphy of Elizabethtown, IN, and Ernest Dwain Shorty (Kathy) Murphy of Elizabethtown, IN; a daughter, Nancy (Ron) Speer of Hartsville, IN; grandchildren, Yancey (Amanda) Murphy, Tara (Daniel) Humphreys, Eryn (Travis) Mitchell, Josh (Carissa) Murphy, Marcus (Jennifer) Speer and Andy (Sarah) Speer; great-grandchildren, Daniel, Heidi and Joel Murphy, Jackson and Carleigh Humphreys, Brady and Wyatt Mitchell, Maggie Wagner, Madelyn, Albany and Colton Speer and another great-grandchild expected in December, Matthew James Murphy; a sister, Mildred Kennedy of Hope, IN; and his best friend, Bobby Kain.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John, Wayne and Dale Murphy; sisters, Frances Jacobs and Georgia May Britt; his granddad, John A. Murphy, who raised him; and a grandchild, Darby O. Murphy.
Funeral Information
FUNERAL: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, October 30, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Revs. Doran Chambers and Marcus Speer officiating.
CALLING: 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to the service Saturday.
BURIAL: Hope Moravian Cemetery.
