Esta B. Smith, 87, of Central Avenue, died at 1:04 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011, at Willow Crossing Health & Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Smith was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She was a great cook and an awesome Scrabble player. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Medora. Born in Bedford June 5, 1924, Mrs. Smith was the daughter of Florein Smith and Ruth Blair Smith Helton. She married Orville Smith May 8, 1944. He preceded her in death Sept. 23, 2002. Mrs. Smith is survived by a daughter, Joy Lee Phillips Verbeke of Columbus, IN; a son, William K. (Lorene) Smith of New Smryna Beach, FL; a sister, Nell White of Freetown, IN; a daughter-in-law, Candy Davis Smith of Jackson County, IN; grandchildren, Scott Smith of New Smryna Beach, FL, Nicole Smith White of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Anthony Phillips of Cincinnati, OH, Kipling Phillips of Hamburg, Germany, and Joshua Verbeke of Indianapolis, IN; three stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant brother and a sister. SERVICES: FUNERAL - will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Dennis McCarty officiating. CALLING - will be Saturday from 2 p.m. until service time. BURIAL - will be at White River Valley Cemetery. MEMORIALS - may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.
