Francis Joseph Critney Jr. September 13, 1924 - September 27, 2010 Francis Joseph Critney Jr., 86, of Columbus, died at 6:16 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, at Methodist Hospital Yellow Rose Hospice. Mr. Critney attended Columbus High School and St. Meinrad Monastery and had worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, Seabees Construction Battalion, retired from Cummins Engine Company in 1987 and also was a farmer. He enjoyed playing the guitar and sang at numerous nursing homes, church and Franklin Senior Center. He was a member of the Mens Ministry Choir at St. Bartholomew and had been a hospice volunteer. Born in Edinburgh Sept. 13, 1924, Mr. Critney was the son of Francis Joseph and Margaret Anderson Critney. He married Florence Gennieve Green Feb. 10, 1948. Survivors include his wife; sons, Francis J. Critney III, John Critney and Richard Critney, all of Columbus, IN; daughters, Margaret (Andrew) May of Franklin, IN, and Diana (David) Olmsted of Columbus, IN; grandchildren, Jackie Critney, Nathan Critney, Amie May, Wayne Hadley, Kristy Hadley, Kealy Braughton, Sean Critney and Nicholas Critney; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Critney of Tucson, AZ; sisters, Patricia (Fred) Foster of Charleston, SC, Dorothy (Roy) Farr of Edinburgh, IN, and Alice (Robert) Reeves of Columbus, IN; and uncles, Chester Critney of Seattle, WA, and Robert Critney of Edinburgh, IN. He was preceded in death by brothers, Alfred and Grant Dale Critney; and a grandson, Charles May. Funeral Information FUNERAL: 10 a.m. Friday, October 1, at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church with Father Marty Peter officiating. CALLING: 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, September 30, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. BURIAL: Garland Brook Cemetery.
