Volland, 82, of Columbus, passed away at 3:05 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility. He was born in Columbus November 16, 1931, the son of the late Louis W. and Matilda (Bense) Volland. He was a graduate of Columbus High School, "The Class of 49." Harold served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, from 1952 - '54, and upon returning home he was a rural mail carrier and began farming. Harold served as an elder and on several committees in his church, St. Peter's Lutheran, was on the Bartholomew County REMC Board of Directors for 34 years, presiding as President of the Board from 1992 to 1999, and was a charter member of the Bartholomew County Drainage Board which was created in 1978, and continued serving for 25 years. He also served on the Soil and Water Conservation Board. In 1961, Harold was the recipient of the Gilman O'Neal Conservation Farmer of the Year Award and in 1975 he received the Q.G. Noblitt Award from the Columbus Chamber of Commerce for Outstanding Service in Reforestation or Conservation. In 2010, he and his wife, Margaret, received the Outstanding Service to Extension Award. As a hobby, from 1969 to 1989, he started tractor pulling, which began at county fairs, including the Bartholomew County 4-H Fair, where he helped start the tractor pulling committee. He expanded his love for tractor pulling and became a professional puller, winning many trophies, including the National Tractor Pulling Elite (Indy Super Pull) and the Southern Circuit Championship, to name a few. He traveled in many states and Canada and developed many friendships, most of all with his pulling partner, Dennis Lucas. Survivors include his wife, Margaret (Whipker) Volland; children, Brad and Greg Volland, and Kim (Jody) Littrell; and grandchildren, Patrick Volland and Nick and Paige Littrell, all of Columbus. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Elizabeth (Whipker) McKinney and Barbara (Ray) Whipker, Karen (Meier) Whipker, and Ellen Pardieck; and brothers-in-law, Harry, Bennie, Elmer and Alan Whipker. Harold was preceded in death by his sisters, Helen (Volland) Pardieck and Esther (Volland) Welmer; a brother, Franklin, in 1934, and infant twins in 1925. He was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Lorella (Boeschen) Volland; grandparents, Henry W. and Tilly (Wolf) Volland and William and Emilie (Wilharm) Bense; brothers-in-law, Herschel, Halford, Paul, Perry Don and David Whipker, Jim W. McKinney, and Orville Pardieck; and sisters-in-law, Bea, Pat, Coral Mae, Kris, Opal, Joann and Erna Whipker.
