December 20, 1951 ~ September 24, 2024

Herbert Elmer Sutton, commonly known as Herb, treasured by his family and admired by his friends, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2024, at the same Columbus, Indiana where he first opened his eyes to this world on December 20, 1951. Herb's life was rich with love, service, and simple joys, qualities that were evident to all who knew him. Herb leaves behind a legacy of warmth and devotion, centered around Joyce Ann West Sutton, his beloved wife, who along with his daughters, Holly (Greg) Tourville and Amber (Brad) Potts; his son, Bryan Fonner; his kin, brothers, Mitchell (Connie) Barr, Laurance Sutton, Ronald Sutton, and sisters Mary Morford, Trudy (Bob) Johnson, and Nadine (Mark) Shera, will cherish his memory. His role as a grandfather to Hayden and Carson Fonner and Madilyn and Logan Tourville filled him with immense pride and joy. Additionally, Verna West, his mother-in-law, and his cherished fur babies, Ciara Dee and Gabi Lee, will deeply miss Herb's nurturing presence. Over the years, Herb's professional life was marked by a dedicated career in management of Marsh, Kroger, and Standard grocery stores before taking his well-earned retirement from Applied Laboratories. Beyond work, Herb was a paragon of generosity and selflessness. His hands were gifted in fixing and creating, ensuring he was always in demand. A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 1, 2024 at First Baptist Church 3300 Fairlawn Drive Columbus, IN with Pastor Evan Guse officiating. Visitation for family and friends will begin at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

  1. Herb was such a fun loving brother. WE grew up on a farm in southern Indiana. We played in the hay loft, we rode on the hay wagon. WE went fishing in our stocked pond. We played outside most of each day. I have wonderful memories growing up with this brother. We will see Herb again in Heaven one day. Love , Trudy JOhnson

  2. I was saddened to hear of Herbs passing, I remember him, Trudy, Mick, Ronald, Laurence and little Nadine on the farm! Herb was always gentle and kind.. RIP I know you will be missed. Connie Sutton

  3. Herb was truly a gentle soul. My children and I hold precious memories from our time together. He held a precious Father/Grandfather role for us and we will always be thankful for that time spent together.
Rest easy Herb. Prayers and love to Joyce and her family,

  4. Carolyn and I Sara Sutton are very sorry to learn of Herb’s passing. We grew up enjoying his company and that of his family
