Hubert M. Herber (Hugh), 79, of Columbus, passed away Saturday, November 10, 2018, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.  Hugh was born on April 19, 1939, in Fort Wayne, to Walter and Adele Herber.  He married Renate Döring on September 21, 1963. Hugh joined the US Army in 1959 and was stationed at NATO Headquarters, Paris, France.  He obtained his BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Indiana Institute of Technology, Fort Wayne in 1966.  Hugh then began his career with Cummins Engine Company and retired from Cummins after 30 years of service.  He was a member of St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church and was involved with the Knights of Columbus Council 1414 and served as Grand Knight from 1979-1980.  Hugh was also a member of the Knights of Columbus 3rd and 4th degrees. Hugh was an avid fisherman and made many trips with friends and family to Northern Canada where he fished for Walleye and Northern Pike. A funeral mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, November 16, 2018, at St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church with Fr. Clement T. Davis officiating.  Calling will be from 9 a.m. until time of service Friday at the church.  A private burial will follow the service. Memorials may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility. Survivors include his wife, Renate; son, Ron Herber (Petra) of Memphis, TN, daughter, Kristina Shures of Glen Ellyn, IL, daughter, Ingrid Lee (Dan) of Covington, WA, son, Jason Herber (Pam) of Yorkville, IL; sisters, Teresa Davis and Gertrude Herber, both of Fort Wayne, IN and brother, Charles Herber of Lafayette, IN; grandchildren, Sydney Shures, Ryan Pursel (Laura), Brandon Pursel (Annie), Jacki Pursel; and great-grandchildren, Hayden and Hannah Pursel; and many nieces and nephews. Hugh was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Bernadette Kelley and brother, Anthony Herber.

My condolence to Renate and family.  Hubert was a great first cousin.  I have many good memories as we grew up on the farm and our families helped each other at threshing time and buzzing fire wood.  He always enjoyed a good game of euchre. We had lunch together many times when we went to Central Catholic High School, Fort Wayne.
