J. Mark Casey July 05, 1911 - February 17, 2010 J. Mark Casey, 98, of Columbus, passed away at his home on February 17, 2010. He was born on July 5, 1911, in Henry County, Indiana, to June and Vier Manlove Casey. Survivors include his son, Paul M. (Cindy) Casey of Columbus; a grandson, Brian (Heaven Leigh) Casey of Cornelius, North Carolina; a granddaughter, Laura (Rick) Cox of Brown County; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Tressa Hershberger; and his beautiful wife of 75 years, Florence Tilson Casey, whom he married on September 7, 1934 in Newcastle, Indiana. Mr. Casey was a 1941 graduate of Oakland City College in Oakland City, Indiana. He received his M.S. degree from Indiana University in 1951. He served as a High School principal in Scott, Jennings and Decatur Counties. He was a member of North Vernon Baptist Church, serving as deacon, chairman of the nominating committee, the financial committee, the personnel committee and as a teacher of the Men's Bible Class for a number of years. Mr. Casey served as pastor of Wilson Chapel Church on State Road 7 for two years before finally attending First Methodist Church in Columbus, Indiana, where he loved to serve as witness to the Lord. He founded, owned and operated Jennings Furniture Store for 25 years and also owned and operated Gumble's Department Store for 10 of the 25 years. He became very active in civic affairs, playing a lead roll in getting zoning in Jennings County. He was a member of the zoning board after it's adoption and served as President of the Board of Zoning Appeals. Mr. Casey was also President of the Economic Development Commission for twelve years, during the early time of the rapid industrial growth in North Vernon. He was named "Man of the Year" in 1969 in Jennings County for his interest and dedication in civic affairs. After retirement, he moved to Columbus where he drove the Senior Center bus for nine years. In 1985, he was asked to be Assistant Hospital Chaplin, where he served for several years. Mr. Casey had a great love for his family, who will miss him dearly.
