James K. Baker

SERVICES: Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at Garland Brook Cemetery. VISITATION: 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 7, at Jewell- Rittman Family Funeral Home. BURIAL: Garland Brook Cemetery MEMORIALS: American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association. James K. "Jim" Baker, 65, of Spring Dr. , died at 12:02 p.m., Thursday, July 3, 2014, at the Columbus Regional Hospital Emergency Room. James was born September 6, 1948 in Bartholomew County, the son of James K. and Grace E. Lister Baker. Jim married Janet L. Hulse on October 15, 1988. James graduated from Columbus North High School in 1966 and from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in 1971. Early in his career, James was employed at Cummins Engine Company as a Machinist. Interests in law enforcement led to employment as a Deputy Sheriff in Bartholomew County. He later became the Chief Marshall in Hope, Indiana. His law enforcement career finished with James being a Detective for the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department. James later worked in various new car dealerships and was the owner and operator of Baker Auto Sales. For the past 17 years was currently self-employed as a Real Estate Agent in Columbus. James enjoyed hunting, fishing, NHRA Drag racing and NASCAR, along with working in his garden. Survivors include his father, James K. Baker of Nebraska; his wife, Janet; a son, William "Bill" Baker, of West Virginia; a daughter, Amy Baker of Florida; sister, Gloria (Kenny) Hosli, of Seymour; nieces, Kathy (Brian) Kieser and Kim (Terry) Fordice; and several great-nieces and nephews. James was preceded in death by his mother; and a sister, Dorla Ruse.
