James L. Newton, 79, of California Street, died at 12:44 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, at Columbus Regional Hospital Emergency Room. Mr. Newton retired in 1988 from Cummins Engine Company where he worked for 15 years as a systems analyst. In 1974 he moved from Indianapolis where he had worked 17 years at Indiana Gear Works/Buehler Corp. Following that he spent time at Mayflower Moving and Switzer Corp. While working with Cummins he spent several years at the Charleston, S.C., plant. Born in Indianapolis on May 9, 1933, Mr. Newton was the son of Alene and Louie Newton. He graduated from Howe High School in Indianapolis and attended Butler University. He married Donna J. Kornbroke in Indianapolis April 17, 1954, at the Chapel in the Woods, NAS, Norfolk, Va. Survivors include his wife, Donna, and daughters, Michele (Gary) Hansford of Carthage, Mo., and Kay Newton (Tom Peting) of Mishawaka, Ind. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Ryan Schultz (Stacie) of Wisconsin, Angela Jeffery (Michael), U.S. Army-Colorado, and Christopher Levendoski (Raen) of Moore, Okla. There are also four great-grandchildren, Paige, Dane and Dominic Schultz, all of Wisconsin, and Ian Levendoski of Oklahoma. Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home on 25th Street is handling arrangements. There will be no visitation and private burial at Garland Brook Cemetery will be at a later date. Per Mr. Newton's request, memorial contributions may be made to Bartholomew County Humane Society. Mr. Newton, along with his wife Donna, devoted many years to promoting interest in Scottie dog collectibles. Together they published a quarterly newspaper, the "Scottie Sampler," which aided collectors of Scottie dog memorabilia. When they retired and sold the publication in 1996, they had over 1,100 subscribers worldwide. Their home-based business, Wee Scots, Inc., sponsored annual collector shows and area meetings throughout the United States. In addition to his having three Scottish Terriers in his home over the years, James was an avid golfer and bowler. He also enjoyed playing bridge. Mr. Newton was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from April 1952 to October 1954. His last station of duty was NAS at Norfolk, Va. While living in Indianapolis, James was a member of Faith United Church of Christ and was a former member of First United Methodist Church in Columbus. He was preceded in death by his parents.
