James owned and operated Overfelt Roofing Company, established in 1979 in Columbus. He was a member of Garden City Church of Christ and served there as elder and adult Sunday School teacher. He was an officer with the Army National Guard in the early 1950s and graduated from the United States Armed Forces Institute Infantry Leadership School light and heavy weapons, Fort Benning, Ga. He co-owned, along with his brother J.W., Columbus Farm Bureau Co-op Service Station on Third Street in the 1960s. He served as supervisor and department manager with Avco International Services Division of Cincinnati, Ohio, in administering the Job Corps program at Camp Atterbury and in Pennsylvania in the early 1970s.
James passed peacefully on Tuesday, July 29, at 10:15 a.m.
Born May 9, 1932, in Hart County, Ky., James was the son of Pete Overfelt and Ruby Mouser Overfelt, both deceased. He married childhood sweetheart, Bonnie Alberta Ackenback, Aug. 23, 1952, at Ogilville Church of Christ with Rev. Harold Barnett officiating.
James is survived by his beloved wife, Bonnie; his children, Bonita (Chuck Surges) Seaborne of Indianapolis, Vicki (Dan) Nelson of Shelbyville, Jim (Sharon) Overfelt of Portland, Tenn., and Steve (Sarah) Overfelt of Spring Hill, Tenn.; his grandchildren, Amy Fischer, Alison Seaborne, DJ Nelson, Lacy Nelson, Michael Nelson, Cassi Overfelt, Jamie Overfelt, Andrew Overfelt, Jason Overfelt and Rylee Overfelt; and a great-grandson, Vincent Fischer. He is also survived by his brothers, J.W. Chub, Doyle, Lindy and Bob Overfelt; and a sister, Rubena Zamora.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Louise Line; and a great-grandson, Devin Seaborne-Rihanek.
Funeral Information
FUNERAL: The celebration of his life will be led by Rev. Virgil Clotfelter of Garden City Church of Christ at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home, 3855 25th Street, Columbus. Garden City Church of Christ elders will serve as pallbearers.
VISITATION: 4 until 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, and also Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of service.
BURIAL: Garland Brook Cemetery with a military graveside service performed by Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.
