James “Mel” Lovins, 88, of Columbus, passed away at 2:37 p.m. Saturday, June 30, 2018 at Hickory Creek of Columbus. James was born September 29, 1929 in Mount Vernon, Kentucky to James Leslie Lovins & Gracie Mink Lovins. He started Mel Lovins Contruction in 1965 and the business is continued on by his son Mike. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 5, 2018 at Garland Brook Cemetery Mausoleum with Virgil Clotfelter officiating. Calling will be from 9:45 a.m. until service time. Inurnment will follow after the memorial service is completed. James is survived by children, Debbie (Don) Warfield, Mike (Lisa) Lovins, Denise (Joe) Brickner and Kathy (Joe) Kinsel; grandchildren, Brian (Danielle), Chad, Amanda, Hope (Anthony), Kyle (Tara), Courtney (Kirk) and Matt; great grandchildren, Ashley, Hunter, Arya, Liam, Arabella and Olivia; brothers, Gene (Sue) Lovins and Wilburt (Faye) Lovins; sisters, Sue Ellen (Elvin) Olmstead and Betty (Bob) Shafer; sister-in-law, Gladys Lovins. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Lorene Rayburn, Viola Bullock and Lenora Barnett; brother, Herman Lovins and infant brother, Lowell Lovins. My condolences to Mel’s family on your loss. I worked at Dunlap’s Big D in the 1970s which is where I got to know Mel.
