James Todd Houston
April 9, 1959 ~ January 14, 2026
James Todd Houston, age 66, of Columbus, IN, passed away on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. He was born on April 9, 1959 in Evansville, IN where he grew up and later met the love of his life, Karen. He graduated from Memorial High School and earned his degrees from the University of Evansville.
He is survived by his wife Karen Houston (Woolen) of 46 years. His beloved children, Bob Houston (Rose) of Vestel, NY, Jamie Daniels (Adam) of Fort Wayne, IN, Brian Houston of Indianapolis, IN, and Danitza Woolen (Kelly) of Seymour, IN. His beloved grandchildren, Noelle Houston, Jack Houston, Landon Daniels, Lilley Houston, Zoey Rogers, Hazelle Houston, Christian Daniels, Rori Rogers, and Jordan Daniels. His brothers Robert Houston Sr., Glenn Houston (Bev), and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Mildred Houston and his sister, Helen Butzloff.
James’ fascination with how things worked began in his youth, and eventually leading him to earn degrees in both electrical and mechanical engineering. He spent 32 years at Valeo, where he was regarded not just for his technical mastery, but for his integrity. To James, a job wasn’t finished until it was done right. He believed that if a machine was broken, it could be fixed, and if a solution didn’t exist, he and his colleagues would build one.
His professional commitment was matched only by his love for those closest to him. He found great comfort in their presence and took pride in providing for them. He enjoyed lively conversations around the dinner table, and making it a point to be present for birthdays, holidays, and sporting events. Additionally, he dedicated countless hours to building custom computers for the younger members, ensuring they were always connected and ready for the future.
James was a truly selfless man whose life was defined by kindness, generosity, and love for others. He was the kind of person who would give you the shirt off his back without hesitation, never expecting anything in return. His caring heart and giving spirit touched anyone he met. Along with his generosity James was known for his sense of humor and quick wit. He loved good banter, playful teasing, and sharing laughs with those around him. His humor brought light to every room even during difficult times and his laughter was often the glue that brought people together. James found joy in helping others, offering a listening ear, a helping hand, or words of encouragement whenever they were needed. He lived with humility, compassion, and an easy-going spirit that made people feel instantly at home.
Above all James loved deeply and unconditionally. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he impacted, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave so freely. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
Friends and family are invited to gather to remember, honor, and celebrate James’ life on Monday, January 19, 2026, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Jewell-Rittman Funeral Service & Crematory. Jim was a good friend (and a good boss) for many years. He and I shared stories on our many trips while working for Sylvania/Osram/Valeo. He was s very smart, fun loving, and kind hearted person, and will be missed by many. Prayers to the Houston Family, Bill Wheeler

Jim, was an amazing person and one of the most intelligent people I have ever met. He always was willing to help and had a smile for everyone. He will be missed greatly not only here at Valeo but everywhere he shared his personality. Sending Prayers to all his family and friends, Della Phillips
So sorry for the family. I worked with Jim a lot on problems and projects throughout the years at Valeo. The obituary was so accurate in describing how Jim was. He was my go to person for work problems and to talk. Sending prayers for the family.
Mr. Houston is one of the best memories I have of Indiana. The whole Houston family is. They were my home away from home. They welcomed me to their home and family when I was so far away from mine. The countless laughs made being away from home so much easier. The memories of our families going out to dinner together when my parents were visiting me from NY. I would not be the person I am or survived my time in Indiana without the Houston family and the laughs that Mr. Houston gave me. I am so heart broken. Sending all of my love to you all…I wish I was not so far away because I really just want to hug you all so tightly right now. Love you all.
I met Jim about 18 years ago when Jamie and Adam were “steady dates”. Every word of his obituary is so very true. His humor, ingenuity, his passion and love of family. Always a positive attitude in any situation. Adam, Landon, Christian and Jordan always looked forward and loved spending time with “Grandfather and Oma”! Jane and I will greatly miss him. Sending prayers for his family.

Jim was always nice to work with and very knowledgeable. I learned a lot from him over the past 30 years. It seemed there would be complex and expensive solutions and Jim would look at it and come up with a more simple solution. I also appreciated his humor. Thank you Jim.
To his Family, so sorry for your loss. Jim will be missed here as well.
The Houstons were the first people we met when our daughter, Aimee, was in college in indiana. They welcomed us New Yorkers with hugs and a basket all things Indiana, including a cookbook, which I still have. Aimee and Jamie became instant friends and still are today.
The Houstons introduced us to Hacienda and to chicken chimichangas mudslides. He made us laugh so much and we were so lucky that our daughter had a second family looking after her. He is gone too soon but heaven needed him now. He’s looking down on his family and grandkids and will watch over them and be their angel. RIP

From the time you escorted me down the aisle, at our siblings wedding, you’ve held a special place in my heart, you were as much family, as your brother, you two were kinda of a package deal, like the time mom & I were having lunch out, we were trying to talk, however there was all this ruckus & booming laughter going on in the next room, I told mom, I know that laugh, it has to be a Houston, sure enough, it was you, Glenn & I believe your son Bobby, having the time of your life, one thing I can honestly say, where there’s a Houston, there’s love & laughter, as I told Bev & Glenn, I know Heaven heard you, before they seen you & where most people will follow the light to get to Heaven, I’ll follow your booming laugh, I love you Jimmy
