She was born to Ray and Margaret Rockenbaugh. Jan graduated from Penn High School in 1969 and received a BA in Physical Education and Health from Augustana College in 1973. She married James E. "Jim" Zeiger that same year and they lived in Columbus for 35 years. For over 12 years she served as assistant director and director for the largest older adult tutoring and mentoring program in the state of Indiana, which began as a Peace Corps/VISTA program. The program has been recently honored nationally for its excellence by the Corporation for National and Service. She just received a plaque from the Foster Grandparents Advisory Council for her years of dedication and devotion. She was an active member and officer of the Indiana State Association of Foster Grandparent Directors. Her commitment and drive helped over 1,000 volunteers touch the lives of thousands of children in need. In 1987, Jan and Jim founded the Jumphound Gang, a competitive jump-rope team of national renown that made a huge difference in the lives of over 700 Columbus children. Jan loved to garden, read, antique shop, paint, create wonderful craft items, sew and dream up ways she could spoil her impending grandchild. She is survived by her husband, Jim, and two children, James E. Zeiger Jr. of Fishers and Tracie L. Helmbrecht of Fishers; a son-in-law, Matt Helmbrecht; her sister, Sue Cripe of Greenwood; a brother, David Rockenbaugh of Chicago; and her father, Ray Rockenbaugh Jr. of Goshen. She was preceded in death by her mother, Margaret Rockenbaugh, and brother, Steven J. Rockenbaugh.

Jan Sue Zeiger, 62, of Columbus, died Saturday, June 22.

I had the honor of knowing Jan and worked under her guidance in the foster grandparent program in Crothersville for the past three school years. She was a wonderful person and will be sadly missed. God Bless you Jan .R.I.P.

Jan was an amazing woman, incredible mom and all around beautiful person both inside and out. She will truly be missed, but will live on in her children and grandchildren. My thoughts, prayers and love are with the entire Zeiger family.

I was a student at Smith Elementary School in Columbus from 1996 until 2004, and in that time, I had a gym teacher named Mr. Zeiger, and I love him so much! I’m about 90% sure this is your wife, Jim, and I am very sorry for your loss. I wrote the pending obituary at The Republic on Sunday, and I had a feeling she was your wife. So, I’m sorry for your loss.

My deepest sympathy to your family. I worked with Jan at ACSSCI. I was the other Jan there. I will miss her smiling face and her kind and gentle nature. I will always remember the last time I saw her– when she confided in me that she was to be a grandmother. She had such a glow about her. God Bless you all.
