John S. Philyaw June 27, 2008 Johnnie S. J.P. Philyaw, 54, of Scottsburg, Ind., died at 6:50 a.m. Friday, June 27, 2008, at his home. Johnnie JP Philyaw was born June 10, 1954 in Columbus, Indiana, the son of Albert Leroy and Elsie Ann Holley Philyaw. In 1971 he joined the Navy but through his entire life, music was his true passion. Johnnie was in bands such as Bander Snatch, Drivin Wheel, New Ground and the most recent, Smooth Country. He played almost every weekend for 5 years in Nashville, Indiana. In 1986, Johnnie married his wife, Nancy Reed Philyaw. He took in her two children, Chris and Brittney. He loved them and raised them as his own for 22 years. In 1998, Johnnie became a grandfather for the first time. His daughter Brittney gave birth to Angel Rayann, who came into this world and brought more joy to Johnnie than he could ever imagine. In 2001, his first grandson was born and took the name Little Jon. His second granddaughter was born in 2002. In 2007, his son Chris married and three more grandchildren came into his life to spoil. Johnnie found his relationship with God in 2008 when he was baptized and a few weeks later he entered into the priesthood at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. June 27, 2008 Johnnie lost his three-year battle with cancer and returned home to be with the Lord. He will forever remain in the hearts and thoughts of all the lives he touched. A sister, Gail (Paul) Jaggers of Columbus, Ind., also survives. Mr. Philyaw was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alan Russell and Barry Leroy Philyaw; a sister, Debbie Pearl Philyaw; a niece, Melissa Gail Philyaw; and a nephew, Barry Dale Philyaw. Funeral Information FUNERAL: Will be Monday, June 30, 2008, at 7:30 p.m. at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home, with Elder Gary Ponder officiating.
