Karen Beasley-McCart, 78, Columbus, passed away peacefully at home on October 4, 2025. Karen was born on November 17, 1946, to the late LeRoy Hart and Jean (Bush) McAuliffe. Karen graduated from Oldenburg Academy and Indiana State University before earning her Master’s Degree from Indiana University. She spent over 36 years as a high school teacher with the Brown County School Corporation, teaching social studies, English, and eventually overseeing the library. Named Teacher of the Year in 2000, Karen loved being a teacher and impacting the lives of her “kids”. An excellent speaker, she had also been asked to deliver the commencement address on occasion. Karen retired in 2006. Karen loved people and was a high-energy individual who always enjoyed a good time. She married Bill McCart 25 years ago, and the two created many wonderful memories through the years. Bill and Karen both felt that they had married the love of each other's lives. They traveled extensively, often hitting the road with no agenda or schedule. They also enjoyed cruises, dancing, an occasional adult beverage, and spending time with family and friends. Karen enjoyed crafts, working in her flower beds, and was happiest anytime she was with Bill, who referred to her as his Lovely and Loving Wife. Karen will be fondly remembered for her independence, her beauty, and her vibrancy. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Bob McAuliffe; sister, Cindy Bray; and nephew, Drew Bray. Survivors include her husband, Bill McCart; brother-in-law, Jim Bray; and nephew, Beau Bray. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. She was a dear sweet woman. I was one of her library cadets at BCHS 1980-1981 and I remember watching the Space Shuttle launch & landing with her and Mrs. Leota Skirvin. There were so many happy tears. Karen was one of my favorite teachers. Definitely one of a kind. ❤️

    • I have such fond memories. As a very shy young girl sitting in English class, which I thought I hated, she made it so easy. She recognize my love for reading and encourage that especially when I would visit the library. Always kind and her love for teaching was very apparent. May she rest in peace. Prayers of peace and comfort for her family And all of the students who adored her.

  2. Karen was a strong woman who made Dad happy for many years. I will always be appreciative of the love they shared. Rest in peace sweet lady.

  3. I deeply admired her greatly, she was indeed exceptional. She left a profound impact on numerous individuals’ lives. My heartfelt thoughts and prayers are extended to her family.

  4. My first teaching job out of college was at Brown County High and Karen was so helpful and always a fun person to be around. Great memories!

  5. I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Karen – She and I are cousins through her Mother and my Father – Always loved playing catch up when we were able to talk – loved the conversations when our family visited. One time when visiting we surprised her at school then met up at a restaurant for good ole conversation. Karen always enjoyed talking to my Dad about his growing up years. She was the best and loved keeping track of family.

  6. So sorry for your loss.
A truly remarkable person, so inspiring to so many, intelligent, beautiful, vibrant, optimistic.
I met Karen in college so many years ago, and although I had not seen her in many years, I always hoped we would get the opportunity to talk again. I’ll always remember her kindness.
