Kenneth Raymond Mitchell
September 25, 1951 ~ April 25, 2025
Kenneth Mitchell (Mitch or Doc Mitch), 73, of Columbus, passed Friday, April 25, 2025 at his home. Kenneth was born on September 25, 1951 in Columbus, IN to Raymond Mitchell and Sadie Mitchell. He married Denise Rae Worton on April 24, 1998.
Kenneth was a graduate of Columbus High School. He then went on to serve in the U.S. Army as a Military Police Officer. Soon after he enrolled to Indiana University where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree. Where his love of being an IU fan really blossomed. If you knew Mitch you knew he was an IU fan.
After completing his studies, Kenneth embarked on a distinguished career with the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA). His dedication to the IHCDA helped many people work through foreclosures and stay in their homes.
He also volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) representing kids with difficult situations. Colleagues and volunteers remember Kenneth as a man of integrity, who brought both passion and level-headedness to his work.
Kenneth's love for sports was more than just a pastime; it was a vital part of who he was. He was an avid softball player in his younger years, a keen golfer, and an exceptional bowler. His skill on the lanes led him to achieve an extraordinary twenty 300 games, earning him a well-deserved place in the Indiana Bowling Association Hall of Fame. His enthusiasm for the sport and his ability to assess anyone’s form led him to the nickname “Doc Mitchell”. He could watch you bowl one time and diagnose your form with a prescription for success.
Above all, Kenneth was a family man. He enjoyed the time spent with his loved ones, especially his kids and grandchildren, who were the light of his life. He loved to swim in his pool with all the kids and was always the first one in for the season doing his patented “Nestea plunge” which was basically falling in back first, no matter the temperature.
Survivors include his wife, Denise Rae Mitchell; daughter, Amanda (John) Darlage of Columbus, IN; step-children, Tricia Hornback and Amber Thompson both of Columbus, IN; grandchildren, Tobi Lambert, Alec Hornback, Ulisses Meza, Alijah Meza, Jackson Darlage, Ashley Lambert, Derek Lambert, Kaylinn Billings and Aubrey Billings; great grandchildren, Kyler and Blaire.
