Larry P. McCord

Larry P. McCord, 81, of Columbus, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025, at Covered Bridge Health Campus. He was born in Ogilville, Indiana, on June 24, 1943, to the late Irvin P. McCord and Olive Collins McCord. He was the husband of Carol Richards McCord, whom he married on June 12, 1965.
Larry graduated from Columbus High School. After high school, Larry proudly enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served 3 years active duty and 3 years in the reserves. After serving in the Navy, he went to work for the Columbus Fire Department, where he held several different ranks. In 1987, Larry was appointed Fire Chief by Mayor Robert Stewart, retiring in 1992 after 28 years of service. While he was the Fire Chief, Larry oversaw the restoration of the department’s 1937 Stuz Pumper. Kenneth Greenlee, from Cummins, was assigned to help complete the project.
He was a member of Seymour Masonic Lodge #146, First Christian Church, and attended the Ogilville Christian Church. In 1978, Larry was elected Ohio Township Trustee, serving his community in that position until 1986. He also served on the Ohio Township Advisory Board for many years. In April of 2023, Larry had the privilege of going on the Veterans Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, flowers, and woodcutting. Larry was also a published poet, with his first publication being released in 2015.
Most of all, Larry loved the Lord and his family. He will be deeply missed.

Larry is survived by his wife, Carol McCord; children, Matthew P. (Liz) McCord, of Louisville, KY, Aaron Bruce (Stacy) McCord, of Columbus, IN, and Jason Andrew (Christina) McCord, of Columbus, IN; sisters, Barbara Schrougham, of Columbus, IN, Rosemary Hedger, of West Virginia, and Sharon (Glen) Schurman, of Columbus, IN; grandchildren, Kylee (David) Urquidi, Josh (Courtney) McCord, Hannah (Jack Wilkerson) McCord, Collin (Sarah) McCord, Sarah (Avinash) McCord, Victoria (Kendall) Yeaton, Makenna McCord, and Charlotte Stratford; and great-grandchildren, Grace, Kaleb, Laikyn, Julian, Jude, Ezra, Malachi Yeaton, Henry Paul McCord.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Irvin and Olive McCord; sisters, Patricia McCord and Bonnie Brooks; and grandson, Ben Stratford.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2025, at Ogilville Christian Church, with Rev. Marty Wright and Rev. Steve Barrett officiating. Calling hours will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2025, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Community Provisions Inc., Seymour, IN, or Schneck Medical Center Hospice through the funeral home.
