Lonnie "Moe" Whitis
October 29, 1951 ~ January 23, 2024
Lonnie “Moe” Whitis, 72 of Elizabethtown, died on January 23, 2024, at Columbus Regional Hospital. Lonnie was born to George and Virginia Mount Whitis in Columbus on October 29, 1951. He was united to Debra Burton on April 15, 1972, and she preceded him in death in 2021. Lonnie was a car detailer for Bob Poynter, worked on campers for Gilliand Trailer, and also was a custodian for Bartholomew County School District for several years.
Moe was loved by everyone that ran into him. He was sweet, and caring, and would go out of his way for anyone who needed a hand. He loved working on cars but also enjoyed car rides. Lonnie was a man who could fix just about anything that had an engine in it. Lonnie also enjoyed classic cartoons, car shows, and playing softball in his younger years, but most of all loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Lonnie fought a courageous 3-year battle with cancer, and through the pain, and treatment, he carried his humor everywhere he went. He was also Debra’s caretaker for several years when she became ill and wanted to do everything he could for her.
Lonnie is survived by his children, Jenny Mings, Connie (Jeff) Wilson, Jeff (Kelly) Whitis, and Daniel Whitis; his grandchildren, Bethanne, Bryan, Samantha, Tyler, Bryce, Kia, Skylar, Daniel, Jace, and Brianna; his great-grandchildren, Ethan, Iris, Skyla, Skylyn, and Lydia. He is also survived by his brothers, Clarence Whitis, Larry (Connie) Whitis, Gene (Sherry) Whitis, Dewey Whitis, and his sister Edith George.
Preceding Lonnie in death are his parents, his wife Debra, brothers, Billy Whitis, Marvin Whitis, Bobby Whitis, Kenney Whitis, Edward Whitis, Paul Whitis, Lewey Whitis, Ronnie Whitis, Harold Whitis, and sister Euna “Sis” Jackson.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 26, 2024, between 10:00 and 12:00 at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Friday beginning at 12:00 with Pastor Jon Lucas officiating. Lonnie will be laid to rest next to Debra at the Ohio Chapel Cemetery in Ogilville.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the IU Health Simon Cancer Center, or Our Hospice of South-Central Indiana.
Arrangements entrusted to Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home.

Apparently this was my biological grandfather , I searched for him but he never looked for me & didn’t help to raise my mother ! I see he did well in hiding these secrets . Don’t worry Donna Jo Burton , ( his daughter who was raised by another man ) & myself ( granddaughter who wondered what he looked like my whole life) had 2 people who loved us & claimed us & made an effort. I hope he faces my mother’s Mother ( my grandma ) & my papaw ( my mom step dad ) in Heaven!
