Mark Adrian Miller
November 8, 1947 ~ July 29, 2024
Mark A Miller was a beloved Columbus educator known for his jokes and humor. He died at age 76 on July 29, 2024, at Traditions of Columbus
He was born in Columbus in 1947 to Ray and Lydia Miller. He, along with his older brother Phil, spent a happy childhood playing with friends, taking care of their unusual pets (including an alligator and a raccoon), and attending St. Peter’s Lutheran School. After graduating from Columbus High School, he attended Ball State University with a major in education for both his Bachelor's and Masters's degrees. He originally thought he would use his talents teaching history, but also decided to focus on math education, which eventually was the focus of his career.
After college graduation in 1969, he returned to Columbus as a Math teacher at Northside Middle School. Here he introduced generations of students to algebra and geometry through “Rosco and Bosco”, gummy bear incentives, and the popular phrase “A Day without Math is like a Day without Sunshine”. In 1991, he was honored with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching which included a trip to Washington DC. At the time of his retirement in 2014, he had taught math for 45 years at Northside.
It was also in Columbus that he met his wife of 45 years, Gail Burgeson while playing volleyball. They were married June 30,1979 at First Lutheran Church. Mark and Gail happily welcomed daughters Heather and Courtney a few years later, and the family had many happy memories together (with hours of documented home video footage to prove it).
Mark enjoyed travel for his entire adult life. He traveled with friends through Europe in early adulthood, on cross-country road trips with his family, and on international tours with his wife as empty-nesters. Whether in Disney World or Egypt, he was armed with a guidebook and ready to maximize the fun on any trip. He was also a movie buff, Colts fan, wine aficionado, and rose gardener in his spare time. Mark was an active member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and also contributed to the community through Sunrise Rotary.
Mark will always be remembered for his outgoing and friendly personality. He loved getting to catch up with former students, but could also chat with any stranger like they were a good friend.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents Ray and Lydia (Scheidt) Miller and brother, Phil Miller. Survivors include his wife Gail Burgeson Miller, daughters, Heather (Jordan) Elkins and Courtney (Michael) Ward; grandchildren Jasper and Jarvis Elkins and Lyla and Tyler Ward, nephew Alec Miller, and sister-in-law Irida Miller
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 3, 2024, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Tim Carter officiating. Following the service, he will be laid to rest with his parents and extended family in St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Clifty. Friends are invited to the visitation on Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home and on Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mark to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana through the funeral home.

Mark Miller was the best and most influential teacher in my life. Beyond helping me appreciate math in ways I hadn’t before, he introduced me to computers and encouraged me to learn programming – something that changed the direction of my life. It’s fair to say I might not have become an engineer without the solid foundation he helped me build. His example also inspired me to go into semi-retirement as a science and engineering educator – a career I’ve enjoyed for the past 5 years. The world is a poorer place without Mark Miller in it, but the work continues – bad jokes and all.
That smile brought back so many sweet memories and then the sad reality , our prayers for his family 🙏 Earl Linke & Judy Miller
Mark was my favorite cousin. We grew up together and visited each other’s homes during our childhood.
We both attended Ball State University, though he was 2 years ahead of me. Our friendship blossomed in our 30’s as we played together on a local tennis team, traveled over to Oliver Winery to sip and play backgammon. We enjoyed working together at J. Cole Men’s Clothiers and enjoyed many wine tastings over the years. Many fond memories and heartfelt loss, though he is at rest now after these past few years suffering. Much love to Gail and her daughters. Mark is at peace.
Mr. Miller was one of my favorite teachers throughout my schooling. He was a great teacher who always etched in my mind to never give up and always try harder. We all used to think he was a millionaire because he drove a Porsche to school. He was a mentor to me in sports and would always tell me to push myself. Even after my school years, Mark, as I could call him after school, would always have a handshake or put his arm around me and ask how life was treating me. A great man in my eyes, as a teacher, coach, and a friend. Your presence will be missed.
Your Minnesota cousins, Mack’s kids. purchased the Love’s Journey for the family of Mark Adrian Miller.
Mark Miller was my math teacher at Northside Middle School. I struggled with math and he helped me after school to understand better. He was very patient and a teacher I will remember always. Prayers to his Family 🙏❤️
Mark was math teacher at Northside if it wasn’t for him ,I would have never made it .He tot me was to do math where I understand it . Thank you you will be missed by many. RIP
There were so many wonderful years that I had with Mark ( Auggie) through teaching at Northside and working with him at Doctors Psrk for my dad. He was such a fun and talented and friendly person. He will be missed. Thoughts and prayers for the family. May he RIP!
I truly can’t put into words what an impact Mr. Miller had on me. I regret that I never got a chance to tell him. I had him for accelerated Math in the 1985-86 school year and I vividly remember him teaching us tricks for doing bigger math problems in our head. I’m now almost 30 years into my career in Corporate Finance and I have used those tricks virtually every day of my career. Whenever a colleague marvels at my ability to quickly crunch numbers in my head, I tell them about Mark Miller. His passing will not change that. Best wishes to his family and friends! His legacy will live on!
In seventh grade, Mr. Miller didn’t just teach us math; he opened up a whole new dimension of thinking. Introducing me to three-dimensional tic-tac-toe was more than a game—it was a spark that ignited my passion for mathematics. Mr. Miller’s creative teaching and dedication inspired me to pursue a degree in mathematics. His influence has made a lasting impact on my life, and I will always be grateful.
Mr. Miller taught us BASIC computer programming in 7th grade. That was over 30 years ago. I’ve been programming ever since. Probably wouldn’t be where I am in my career without it.

From “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad”, to the numerous handfuls of gummy bears, to Rosco and Bosco, to the classic white chalk always writing down equations and lessons, Mr. Miller knew how to ensure an enjoyable mathematics experience! Thankful to have had him as a student in 7th grade.
So sorry for your loss. I had Mr.Miller many years ago but I remember loving to go to his class. He always made learning fun. RIP

Mr. Miller was my Math teacher, and 7th grade Basketball Coach. (Mid-70’s) He was very good at both, and always wanted the best for his students, and his athletes. He pushed me to simply be better… He made a difference in my life, and I will always be grateful. ❤️
Sending condolences to a beautiful, giving, thoughtful, and caring family. Many thoughts and prayers.

Many fond memories of Mr. Miller through St. Peters, Northside, and participating in Girl Scouts with Heather and Courtney.
I still remember where his classroom was in NMS – my locker was very close to his door so we communicated often. I was a “Chautauquan” in the first year NMS broke students into groups. We spent a lot of time talking about what exactly that was!
There was also a Girl Scouts trip to Cincinnati one weekend and Mr. Miller attended, too. We went to the Museum of National History & Science and I remember him talking about math throughout the day.
My condolences to the entire family. I hope you all can feel the love that’s surrounding you through the wonderful memories that are being shared.

Mr. Miller was my 7th grade math teacher at Northside. He was one of my favorite teachers of all time. As time went on, I would run into him at different places, and he always remembered me and knew my name. That always made me feel good. I am thinking and praying for all of you. Until you meet again.
What wonderful memories! The world has lost a wonderful man and heaven has gained another angel.
I enjoyed knowing Mark and taking care of his lovely daughters. All three of my children had him for math and loved him. He made math fun. Saddened by his death. Sending contribution to Hospice.
We learned to know Mark and Gail through Heather and Marika becoming friends and the friendship grew wider and bigger over the years. We did lots of things together and enjoyed each others’ company at home and away from home. Great memories! Thank you Mark and Gail for your friendship!
