Martha L. Smith, 89, of Chestnut Street, died Friday, August 12, 2011 at her home. She was born in Lawrence County, July 26, 1922, the daughter of Claude C. and Velma V. Stafford Wiley. She married Elmer Eugene Smith December 11, 1938. He preceded her in death March 17, 2009. Martha was a member of Garden City Church of Christ where she belonged to the Golden Harvesters as well as volunteering for many other projects. She loved to read, play cards with friends, as well as all sports. She enjoyed traveling, cooking, entertaining and quilting. Her greatest joy was her family. She is survived by daughters, Sondra (Edwin) Umphress of Columbus, Susan (Dean) Emerson of Columbus and Shelley (Matt) Dawicke of Columbus; grandchil-dren, Lisa (Mike) Lovins, Tammy (Steve) Fannin, Tony, (Tammy) Murphy, Teri Jackson, Wiley (Lisa) Umphress and Marie (Joel) Doyle; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Claudette (Jim) Jackson of Heltonville. Martha was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; and a sister, Ruth Miller. FUNERAL SERVICES: Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday August 17, 2011 at Garden City Church of Christ with the Rev. Virgil Clotfelter officiating. Calling will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday August 16, 2011 at Garden City Church of Christ and from 10 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery. MEMORIAL DONATIONS: Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of South Central Indiana.
