Michael James Mathis

Michael James Mathis, 60, of Columbus, died January 31, 2020, at Columbus Regional Hospital. “Mike”, as family and friends knew him, was born in Indianapolis on August 16, 1959. He was a rather quiet man as those closest to him could attest, but all that quietness went into his big heart. Mike would be the first to help someone out in need. His spirit was calm and collected, quiet, but full of love. He extended that love to his granddaughter, Tara, whom he enjoyed spending time with. The funeral service will be at 4 p.m. Monday, February 3, 2020, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with Pastor Adam Johnson officiating. Calling will be from 2 p.m. until time of service Monday. Mike is survived by his granddaughter, Tara Johnson; siblings, Mark Mathis, Cathy Ryan, Sheri Chaplin and Michelle Oates; sisters-in-law, Peach and Bonnie; brothers-in-law, Bob, David and Jerry Tolen; and multiple nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Joyce Tolen Mathis; a son, Nicholas Mathis; and parents, Carol Sue Tucker Mesa and Bob James Mathis.
