Mildred H. Dooley
Mildred H. Dooley
September 28, 1926 ~ September 17, 2011
Mildred H. Dooley passed peacefully in her sleep from this world to her Heavenly Home Saturday, September 17, 2011. She had been a resident at Willow Crossing Health and Rehabilitation since July 12 of this year. Mildred was born in Beech Grove, Indiana September 28, 1926 to Lutie Pearl (Caughey) and Martin Lawson. After graduation from Beech Grove High School, she married Carl M. Dooley and they had one daughter, Sandy Dooley. In 1961, Mildred moved to Columbus, Indiana and with her friend and business partner, Martha Jackson, formed EM-JA Construction Company. They built many homes in the newly developing additions such as Fairlawn, Flintwood and Tipton Lakes. Mildred was a charter member of Women in Construction and served on the board of Bartholomew County Homebuilders Association. She was an avid sports fan from Butler and IU basketball to Indianapolis Colts and NASCAR. But the thing Mildred loved the most was serving the Lord and working in His church. She was a Licensed Special Worker in the Wesleyan Church in Central and Northern Indiana before moving into the Southern District. She and friend, Fern McHenry, traveled to different churches singing in revivals. Mildred played guitar and stand-up bass. When she moved to Columbus, she joined the Pilgrim Holiness church on Hinman Street that later became Flintwood Wesleyan church. This past June she had been a member of that church for 50 years, serving in many areas of the church. She was a Sunday School teacher, YMWB (Young Missionary Workers Band), Wesleyan Women treasurer, and a member of the choir. She was Secretary of the Local Board of Administration for many years. Mildred is survived by her daughter, Sandy, of Columbus; her sister, Fonda Farnworth and brother, Ernie (Joanne) Lawson of Indianapolis. Also surviving are close family friends Ted (Kim) Jackson and Keri Jackson. She also has many nieces and nephews that she loved very much. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Stanley, Henry, Paul, Donald Lawson and John Lawson who was raised by her parents. She was also preceded in death by her friend, business partner and companion, Martha Jackson. FUNERAL: Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with Rev. Wesley Jones officiating. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery. VISITATION: 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. I knew Mildred thru the construction industry. I, too, was a charter member of Women in Construction in Columbus. Mildred was one fine lady in so many ways. I am thankful that I knew her. Jo Wright
Mildred was a real blessing to everyone who knew her…her journey is over now and she is safe in the arms of Jesus and celebrating with all the friends and family who went on before here. She will be greatly missed.
May God comfort you and give you the peace that only He can during your time of sorrow. Mildred was a good woman who I remember from the Hinman St days and she remained faithful at Flintwood til the end of her time here on earth. Now she is enjoying Heaven and we all hope to meet her there someday…
Sandy, you are in my thoughts and prayers. May God comfort you during this time of grief.
My condolences to Ms. Dooley’s family. Mildred was my aunt too because she was my great-aunt Martha’s companion. Mildred was always kind to me. I loved being around her. She was strong and great woman. She will always remain in a special place in my heart.
