Mildred J. Wininger April 26, 1929 - August 23, 2007 Mildred J. Wininger, 78, of 17th Street died at 1:50 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007, at the home of her son. A resident of Columbus most of her life, Mrs. Wininger was a senior aide at Columbus Regional Hospital for 25 years, worked as an advanced EMT at Athens Ambulance Service for many years, was formerly employed at Columbus Convalescent Center for many years and also worked in the photo lab at Wal-mart for more than 10 years. She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene where she was a hostess for several years and decorated the hostess table. She enjoyed Christian cruises, southern gospel music, bowling and ceramics and was involved in her familys activities and traveling with her grandchildren. She was an advocate and fundraiser for cancer and leukemia research. Mrs. Wininger was born in Bedford April 26, 1929, the daughter of the Rev. S.B. Walls and Sarah Jane Vaught Walls. She married Richard J. Shanks May 16, 1947. He preceded her in death Dec. 10, 1966. She married James D. Wininger Feb. 27, 1970. He survives. Also surviving are sons, Richard D. (Kay) Shanks of Columbus and Randall D. (Pamela) Shanks of Stuart, Fla.; grandchildren, Timothy (Jill) Shanks, Jennifer (James) Laymon and Lynsie (Robert) Guest; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Kalen and Connor Laymon, Joshua, Emilie Ann and Sarah Jane Guest and Haley Hazard; and a brother, Clyde Walls of Seymour. She was preceded in death by her first husband; her parents; a 3-month-old grandson, Randall D. Shanks Jr.; brothers, H. Lowell, Dan and George Walls; and sisters. Lula Howell and Alice Emmert. Funeral Information FUNERAL: 10 a.m. Monday, August 27, 2007 at First Church of the Nazarene with the Revs. Bryan Solomon and Richard Yeaton officiating. VISITATION: 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. until service time Monday at the church. BURIAL: Garland Brook Cemetery.
