Nancy (Mathews) Hughes, 85, of Columbus, IN, passed away at Columbus Transitional Care and Rehabilitation in Columbus, IN. She was born October 04, 1935 to William and Vivian Mathews in Hammond, IN. She married Don D. Hughes on April 9, 1955 in Osgood, IN. Nancy dedicated almost 30 years of service to Developmental Services Inc. and retired in 2016. She enjoyed going on vacation and cruises with her family and friends. She donated to various charities such as the Bartholomew County Cheer Fund, DSI and various animal shelters. Nancy and Don fostered children for over 20 years and 109 children. She was "Mom" to many and "Grandma" to even more. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, 2 babies, her husband, Don Duane Hughes and children, Michael, Mary Ellen, and Helen Ruth Hughes. She is survived by children, Tim Hughes of Columbus, Jon Hughes of Texas, Georgette Parks of Columbus, Carolyn Sue Melton of Columbus; Grandchildren, Dylan Hughes, Taylor Hughes, Samantha Lykins, Alexandra Bradford, Zack Townsend, Kayla Smith and several great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers please donate to DSI, Bartholomew County Cheer Fund, or an animal shelter of your choice. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date. The family has requested a private service at 1:00 PM Tuesday, January 12 that can be viewed online at jewellrittman.com. Services were entrusted to the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home.

    • Our prayers are with you Tim and boys at this difficult time. I have lost my parents and it is never easy. I remember your mom and sister were always going on vacations so she got to see a lot. She was such a caring and generous person. In Gods love, Kim and Jacob Taylor

    • I shared a lifetime of memories with Nancy and Mary. One, a part of our Dsi family but for me all the way back to Lowell Addition growing up and hearing the stories shared by Nancy with my Mom when going to the same small beauty salon. Many of the stories were about all her kids. While working with both at Dsi you truly understood the closet of this family. I am very grateful to have known Nancy and share my thoughts and prayers her family Thanks so much for sharing her service livestream. What a wonderful tribute to Nancy. My god blessed each of you in your time of loss.

  3. So sorry for your loss. Nancy was a wonderful person and loved her family dearly. While working with Nancy at Dsi she talked of her family daily. She will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
