Coles, 94, of McClure Road, died Friday, January 17, 2014, at Columbus Regional Hospital. He was born in Columbus, December 29, 1919, the son of the late James I. and Norma Marie Louden Coles. He married Mary Pauline Rogers on August 2, 1942, and she preceded him in death. Paul retired after 44 and a half years from Cummins, where he worked as a toolmaker. At the time of his retirement in 1983, he was number one in seniority. Paul served his country in the U.S. Navy as a first class motor machinist on the PCE 884 during WWII. He liked to go camping, especially in the Smokey Mountains and Myrtle Beach, gardening, Sunday car rides, sitting on the front porch and spending time with his family. He had the ability to fix almost anything that was broken. He was a member of the CREAK Club and the American Legion of Columbus. He is survived by daughters, Jo (Patrick) Garrett of Seymour and Mary (Mark) Weichman of Columbus; grandchildren, Suzette Coles, Jay (Michelle) Matney, Steven G. Coles, and Jacob (Jody Caudill) Weichman, all of Columbus, and Mark (Kim) Matney of Sadieville, Ky.; great-grandchildren, Zach (Omni) McKinney, Tyson (Michelle) Matney, Amber (Steve) Axsom, Kylie Chasse, Kristina Matney, Sean A. Matney and Sean M. Matney, all of Columbus; a stepgreat-granddaughter, Kelli (Jeremy) Smith of Columbus; and great-great-grandchildren, Kacey and Lauren Brannon, Connor, Emmalyn and Hudson Matney, Rydon and Willow Axsom and Hunter McKinney. Paul was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Pauline of 69 years on November 27, 2011; a son, Steven E. Coles in 2012; brothers, Maynard Coles and William Gerald (Ram) Coles; and sisters, Evelyn Clark and Eloise Henderson. His great-granddaughter, Kristina Matney, was his caretaker for the last three years. Military honors will be conducted by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.
