Rex V. McCue, 90, of Columbus, Indiana, entered his eternal home surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
Rex was born on September 29, 1933, in Monroe County, Kentucky, to Esker McCue and Roma Proffitt McCue. His family moved to Columbus when he was three years old and Rex attended State Street Grade School. Rex graduated from high school in Gamaliel, Kentucky, in 1951 and from Tri-City Barber College in Louisville, Kentucky.
Rex married the love of his life, Charlene Stoneking McCue, on July 23, 1955. Rex and Charlene celebrated 62 years of marriage until Charlene’s passing on August 1, 2017. Rex and Charlene were blessed to travel to all 50 states and many national parks.
Rex was a barber in Columbus for 50 years. He worked in several barber shops, and owned the Palace Barber Shop in Holiday Center and Master Cut Barber Shop in Clover Center. If there ever was a barber that was the G.O.A.T., it would have to be Rex McCue from Columbus, Indiana. Rex McCue cut my hair from when I got out of OCS in 1971 until we moved to Indianapolis in 1988. I even went down to Columbus to get a haircut by Rex a couple of times from Indianapolis when I for sure wanted a great haircut. Rex was the best barber and gentleman; he always went around your head at least 3 times to make sure every hair was in place and exactly the right length. I was thinking about him today and did a search. So sorry to see that he passed away in September of this year. May he rest forevermore in the sweet peace of the Lord.
Rex gave me my first haircut in 1973 and I remember dad and I going to the shop at 25th and Taylor Rd many times. I’ll always remember that barber pole and leaving with a stick of Juicy Fruit gum. ❤️
Steve, Connie, and families. I am so sorry for the loss of a wonderful friend and neighbor that I had for many years. I have many memories, especially the Saturday lunches and drives in the country, usually lost and so surprised at where the roads took us. He missed “Char” so very much and I know he feels blessed to be with her once again. Prayers to you all.
