Richard was born November 13, 1944 in Bartholomew County, the son of Lela Mae Butler. He married Barbara J. Kratt March 25, 1995. Richard had been a tool and die maker for various local machine shops. He was an avid golfer, bowler and auto racer. He enjoyed softball and formerly sat on the Board of Directors for the Columbus Softball Association and was a former board member of the Columbus Bowling Association. Richard also was a member of Eastview Christian Church in Martinsville. Survivors include his mother, Lela Mae Butler Jenkins of Columbus; wife, Barbara J. Kratt Butler of Columbus; son, Eric L. (Jenny) McElhaney of Greenwood; daughters, Teresa Butler (Tim) Simpson of Columbus; Gina M. (Rick) Waldrip of Bargersville; sister, Roberta Elaine (Marvin) Anderson of Nashville; and grandchildren, Evan McElhaney and Ricky Waldrip. He was preceded in death by his father, Alfred Jenkins; and brothers, Philip Wayne Jenkins and Jerry Lynn Jenkins.
