Terrell “Terry” L. Chavis, 72, of Columbus, passed away from this life at 4 PM on Thursday, August 1, 2024, at Our Hospice of South-Central Indiana surrounded by family. Terry was born in Columbus, IN on August 10, 1951, the son of Lewis Bryan Chavis, and Frances Doris Chavis. After many happy years together, Terry married Sharon Gabbard-Shelton on October 12, 2013. Terry loved sports and enjoyed watching dirt track racing. He was dearly loved by his family for his quick wit, wonderful smile, and infectious laugh. He will be missed every single day and will never be forgotten. Terry retired from The Republic Newspaper as a press operator on February 28, 2014 after 32 ½ years. In keeping with Terry’s wishes cremation will take place at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with no services. Terry wanted everyone to remember all the good memories and happy times spent with him. Terry was preceded in death by his father, Lewis Bryan Chavis; mother, Frances Doris Chavis; brother, Anthony “Tony” Chavis; sister, Cynthia “Cindy” Chavis-Taylor; father-in-law, Sidney Gabbard Jr., and brother-in-law, Larry Gabbard. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Chavis; sister, Debra (Bob) Lee; son, Kenneth (Pam) Chavis; granddaughter, Isabella Chavis; bonus daughter, Rebecca (Jesus) Quirino; mother-in-law, Reba Gabbard; brothers-in-law, Sidney (Sherry) Gabbard, and John (Leslie) Gabbard; sisters-in-law, Patricia (Gary) Miller, and Carrie (John) Willis, as well as several nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Our Hospice of South-Central Indiana.

  1. This is Brenda Miller Lucas. Our families spent a lot of time together when we were young. I remember being at their house near the hospital many many times. I am so very sorry to hear of Terry’s passing. For some Time now I have been trying to locate Debbie. Could someone get a message to her in case she doesn’t see this?
