Virgil “Tony” Bateman, 81, of Columbus, IN, passed away Sunday, December 21, 2025 at his home. Tony was born in Loogootee, IN on May 25, 1944 to Virgil A. Bateman and Elizabeth Taylor Bateman. He married Wanda Souerdike on June 12, 1965, she passed away on August 23, 2010. Tony then married Marsha A. Eubank Coles on October 8, 2012. Tony graduated from Barr-Reeves High School before serving his country with honor in the United States Navy. His commitment to service did not end with his military career; he continued to make a positive impact on those around him through his work and community involvement. After retiring from a fulfilling career at Cummins Engine Company, Tony channeled his entrepreneurial spirit into co-owning Heartsville Sweets, a beloved local establishment that brought joy to many. A man of deep faith, Tony was an active member and deacon of Berean Bible Church, and also shared fellowship with the congregation at Bible Church of Columbus. His spiritual life was a cornerstone of his existence, guiding his actions and interactions with kindness and compassion. Tony's passion for sports was undeniable. He was an avid fan, enthusiastically supporting Indiana University athletics, the Chicago Bears, and the St. Louis Cardinals. His love for the games went beyond spectating; Tony was well-known in the community as an umpire for softball and a basketball referee. His fair play and respect for the sports were evident to all who played under his watchful eye. In addition to his love for sports, Tony found solace and excitement in the great outdoors. Deer hunting was not just a hobby but a way for him to connect with nature and enjoy the peacefulness it offered. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, December 26, 2025 at Bible Church of Columbus, 3010 10th St., Columbus, IN 47201 with Rev. David Marvin officiating. Calling hours will be from 12 p.m. until service time Friday at the church. Military honors will be conducted by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard. Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 27, 2025 at Truelove Methodist Cemetery in Loogootee, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Hospice of South-Central Indiana, 2626 17th St., Columbus, IN 47201 or International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, P.O. Box 96105, Washington, DC 20090-6105. Survivors include his wife, Marsha Bateman; children, Tina (Steve) Vanest and Troy (Hetty) Bateman both of Columbus, IN; step-children, Shawn Coles, Shannon (Erik) Ferrill and Shane (Whitney) Coles all of Columbus, IN; brothers, Billy Bateman, Joe Bateman, Gary Bateman and Keith Bateman; sisters, Kathy Utzman, Beverly Bateman, Marybeth Williams and Linda Bateman; grandchildren, Whitney, Joshua (Ashleigh), Dalton (Michele), Paige (Hunter), Payton (Tyler) and Hunter; great-grandchildren, Paige, Braelyn, Kyler, Aria, Paislee and Reid; step-grandchildren, Ashley (Richie), Noah, Micah, Karlie, Ethan and Courtney; Step-great grandchildren, Elle, Mila, Em and Sophia. Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Elizabeth Batemen; first wife, Wanda; brothers, Bob, John and Kevin Bateman; a sister, Karen Ellis.
