Walter E. Babbs June 27, 1934 - November 17, 2008 Walter E. Babbs, 74, of South Drive died at 4:55 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, 2008, at Columbus Regional Hospital. A veteran of the Indiana National Guard, Mr. Babbs worked at Irwin Union Bank for 18 years then retired after 20 years at Salin Bank where he was vice president of consumer lending. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Spencer, a member and current treasurer of Columbus Lions Club and the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. He was a former member of Exchange Club and Elks Club, past treasurer of the Firemans Cheer Fund, and a past member of the Cancer Board and Consumer Credit Counseling Committee. He was an avid golfer and collected stamps for more than 60 years. Born in Owen County June 27, 1934, Mr. Babbs was the son of Elmer M. and Mary K. Clemmer Babbs. He married Donna A. Daniels May 3, 1956. Survivors include his wife; a son, Mark A. (Anna) Babbs of Bloomington; daughters, Julie A. (Dennis) Michael of Columbus, Karen D. (Mark) Galbraith of Cookeville, Tenn., and Angela D. Petro of Columbus; grandchildren, Joshua Michael, Justin Michael, Colby Babbs, Jacob Babbs, Kylie Petro, Megan Petro and Ryan Ranard; a great-grandson, Chad Michael; and a sister, Susan (Gary) Hall of Spencer. He was preceded in death by his parents.
