Wendel E. Shireman June 06, 1926 - December 04, 2009 Wendel E. Shireman, 83, of 22nd Street in Columbus, Ind., died Friday, December 4, 2009, at 11:25 p.m. at Columbus Regional Hospital. Wendel was a proud World War II veteran. He served in the U.S. Army 94th Infantry Division, and was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. He was also posted as a guard during the Nuremberg Trials. Wendel farmed all of his life, and was previously a manager of the Columbus Branch of Trojan U.S. Powder, an explosives manufacturer. Upon retirement, Wendel continued farming and was active in many organizations. Wendel was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church. He was a 60-year member of St. Johns #20 Masonic Lodge, York Rite, Scottish Rite, Bartholomew County Shriners, was a past State President of the High Twelve; he was also a member of the Columbus Grange, as well as being the past State Master of the Indiana State Grange, and was previously appointed as the Grange Representative to the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago. Wendel was also a lifelong member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a past member of the Board of Zoning Appeals, as well as a current Board Member of the Alcohol & Beverage Commission. Wendel was also highly involved in 4-H, serving as a past Extension Board Member, Past President of the 4-H Council, a past 4-H club leader, and was the last surviving member of the original Fair Board and was also a Past President of the Bartholomew County Modern Farmers. He was also a member of the Indiana Farm Bureau. Wendel was highly active in the Democratic Party, being past County Chairman and a longtime Precinct Committee Chairman. Wendel was born June 6, 1926 in Columbus, Indiana, the son of Charles H. and Lucy Wendel Shireman. He married Dorothy Setser on October 6, 1946. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Setser Shireman; sons, Steve Shireman, Michael (Brenda) Shireman and John (Joyce) Shireman, all of Columbus; grandchildren, Stacy (Robert) Stater, Matt (Cheryl) Shireman, Susan (Zach) Armstrong, Scott (Jeny) Shireman, Jennifer (Jeremy) Kittle and Glen (Heather) Shireman; great-grandchildren, Clayton Shireman, John Robert Armstrong, Charles Shireman and Emily Shireman. Wendel was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Terrilyn Shireman; and a grandchild, Angela Shireman. Funeral Information FUNERAL: Will be conducted Tuesday, December 8, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Isbell officiating. VISITATION: Will be Monday, December 7, 2009, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Masonic Memorial Service at 7:30 p.m. and on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until time of service. BURIAL: Will be at Garland Brook Cemetery with a military graveside service conducted by the Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.
