William "Bill" Gottfried
April 6, 1945 ~ August 28, 2024
William “Bill” Gottfried, age 79, passed away on August 28, 2024, in Columbus, Indiana. Born on April 6, 1945, in Seattle, Washington, Bill was the son of William Gottfried Jr. and Esther (Bell) Gottfried.
Bill spent his formative years in Seymour, Indiana, attending Immanuel Lutheran School and graduating from Seymour High School in 1963. During his high school years, he was celebrated as an MVP Baseball Player, a testament to his dedication and skill in the sport.
Following high school, Bill answered the call to serve his country by joining the Indiana National Guard. His commitment to service was further exemplified by his impressive 30-year career at Cummins, where he made significant contributions.
Bill’s personal life was marked by a devoted and endearing marriage to Donna (Keith) Gottfried. Though Bill and Donna did not have children of their own, their home was always full of love and warmth, extending to his sisters Shirley Wolka of Seymour, Schella Smith of Lebanon, and Connie Gottfried of Seymour, as well as his many nieces and nephews.
Bill was an avid fisherman, a hobby he passionately shared with the community’s children and his church. His fishing outings were more than just a pastime; they were opportunities for mentorship and generosity, often ending with a treat at McDonald’s, a gesture fondly remembered by many.
His faith was central to his life. Confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Seymour, Bill later became a devoted member of Calvary Community Fellowship Church of the Nazarene in Columbus, where he actively participated in church activities and exemplified his commitment to his faith.
A funeral service will be held on September 3, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home, with Rev. Paul Blair officiating. Calling hours will be from 9:00 AM until the time of service. Bill will be laid to rest at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Seymour, with military honors by the Indiana National Guard following the luncheon at 3:00 PM at the cemetery. The luncheon will be held immediately following the service at Calvary Community Fellowship located at 5400 Rocky Ford Road Columbus, In 47203.
