William G. Coles June 21, 1917 - January 25, 2009 William G. Ram Coles, 91, of Two Worlds Drive died at 12:15 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility. A lifelong resident of Columbus, Mr. Coles graduated from Columbus High School in 1935 then went to work at Cummins Engine Co. He retired in 1980 after 45 years of service. In March 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserves and was deployed with the 7th Amphibious Fleet to the South Pacific. He was discharged in April 1946. He had been a member of Sandy Hook United Methodist Church since 1930, was a member of CREAK Club and Bartholomew County Senior Center and a charter member of the Silver Tones Choir. He was an avid golfer and bowler and loved music, especially from the 1930s and 40s. Born in Columbus June 21, 1917, Mr. Coles was the son of James I. and Marie Louden Coles. He married Evelyn E. Kendall Coles March 31, 1946. Survivors include his wife; sons, James A.(Barbara) Coles of Carmel, Jerry L. (Melanie) Coles of Fort Myers, Fla., and Jon K. (Lora) Coles of Columbus; grandchildren, Kathleen Sorrells, James A. Coles Jr., Brian L. Coles, Matthew L. Coles, Meghan L. Coles, Mackenzie E. Coles, Delaney G. Coles and Darby R. Coles; a brother, Paul E. Coles of Columbus; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James Maynard Coles; and sisters, Evelyn Clark and Eloise Henderson. Funeral Information VISITATION:Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at Jewell - Rittman Family Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday. FUNERAL: The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Russell officiating. BURIAL: Garland Brook Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.   1. Ram was my supervisor at Cummins Engine Company. I had much respect and admiration for the man. He was my friend. There were times when my spirit was low and my confidence not it should have been. I went to hom and told him I didn’t feel I could make it, that I wanted to go back to my old job. He would always talk to me and tell me that the job I had with him would take six years before Cummins made any money from their investment in me. I’m glad I listened to him…He had a good soul. I went elementary school with his son, Jim. Jim was made of the same strong fabric as his Dad. I hope someday to see Ram again someday and relive some of the good memories he gave me. Rest in piece, Ram…
