William L. Garten October 27, 1924 - December 10, 2005 William L. Bill Garten, 81, of North Marr Road, died at 4:40 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005 at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility at Columbus. Bill graduated from Shelbyville High School where he participated in football, basketball and baseball. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II in which he served aboard the U.S.S. Franklin (CV13) aircraft carrier and achieved the rank of Aviation Machinist Mate Chief as an aerial gunner and torpedo bomber. He served from 1942 to 1946 and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Bill retired from Sears in 1987 after 34 years of dedicated service. He was a past member of the Lions and Jaycee clubs and was a current member of the Elks Club. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of South Central Indiana. Mr. Garten was born Oct. 27, 1924 in Franklin, the son of Frank W. and Daisy Kerr Garten. He married Mary L. Andrews on Oct. 3, 1946. Survivors include his wife; a son, William A. Bill (Jennifer Meyer) Garten of Francesville; a grandson, Jeff A. (Khaye) Garten of Peru; and his precious greatgranddaughter, Jaina Jade Garten. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a granddaughter, Ashley N.
