In Memoriam
Keith Jewell
October 11, 1961 - April 23, 2016
Keith Jewell passed away on April 23, 2016.
Keith was part of the funeral service profession for most of his life. While growing up, his father, Vernon Jewell, owned the Reed and Jewell Funeral Home, which influenced Keith’s lifelong involvement in the industry. Later, Keith became part owner and manager of the Jewell and Curry Burial Vault Company. He graduated from Columbus East High School in 1979.
Keith was married to his wife, Donna Jewell, and together they raised four children: Cortney, Gage, Tyffani, and Wesley Jewell. They were blessed with four grandchildren.
In Loving Memory of Vernon L. Jewell
A graduate of the Indiana College of Mortuary Science, Vernon moved to Columbus in 1960 to work for Wayne Reed at the Reed Funeral Home. He purchased the funeral home from Wayne in 1968, and it became known as Reed & Jewell Funeral Home Inc.
In the mid 1980's, Vernon sold the business to Myers Funeral Service, and in the late 1990's it was then sold to the world's largest funeral chain, Service Corporation International (publicly traded as SCI), also known as Dignity Memorial, headquartered in Houston, Texas.
In the meantime, Vernon's step-son, Nick Rittman, graduated from Mid-America College of Funeral Service and was a funeral director in northern Indiana and his youngest son, Heeth Jewell, graduated from Mid-America, and they saw that Columbus needed a local, family-owned funeral home. It was essential to Vernon and the boys to make decisions locally, with the local community’s best interests at the forefront. The family decided to open the Vernon Jewell-Nick Rittman Funeral Home in 1999 and rebranded a few years later as Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home.
Vernon enjoyed living on a small farm with his wife, Phyllis. He and Phyllis blended their families when they married with children Mindie Jewell, Keith Jewell, Diane Smith, Heeth Jewell, Nick Rittman, Todd Rittman and Vikki Henkle. As the son of a preacher and above all else, he was a man whose faith was deeply woven into every part of his life and this was never more evident than when his children, Mindie and Keith, died before him. Through the years, he remained active in several different churches, always finding purpose and fellowship in serving and worshipping within each community.
Throughout his life, Vernon cherished spending time with his six sisters, 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Rarely missing an opportunity to go fishing, he enjoyed spending his evenings fishing at a local lake and vacationing in Canada with family and friends.
Vernon's commitment to his community was evident through his dedicated service as a Bartholomew County Commissioner from 1985 until 1992, Auditor from 1993 until 2000, and Treasurer from 2001 until 2008. Vernon's professional life was a testament to his integrity and his desire to serve others.
Vernon’s absence in the community and around the funeral home left an indelible void for many who considered him a friend. Vernon died in his sleep on August 24, 2024. He continued to work full-time in the family business until his death.
