Barry Michael Turnbow passed away on April 11, 2026, in Columbus, Indiana—the same date he was born in 1954 – leaving behind a legacy of love, leadership, and unwavering devotion to family, friends, and the many young lives he helped shape.
Born in Murray, Kentucky, to Rondal Maxell “Max” and Rosetta “Rosie” Burgess Turnbow, Barry grew into a man defined by hard work, loyalty, and a deep sense of community. On April 7, 1984, he married the love of his life, Paula Sue McMillan, who survives.
Barry dedicated more than 25 years to coaching youth sports. He became the winningest coach in the history of Richards basketball with over 300 wins at Richards Elementary. To Barry, coaching was never just about the game – it was about building confidence, character, teamwork, and respect. His steady guidance, competitive spirit, and genuine care left a lasting impression on every child he coached.
He also found great joy in golf and was a lifelong, devoted Indiana University fan and season ticket holder. Through every win and loss, Barry’s loyalty never wavered. He worked at Arvin Meritor from 1978 until his retirement in 2018, earning the respect of coworkers through his strong work ethic and character.
Above all, Barry was a devoted family man. His family was his greatest pride and joy, especially his grandchildren. He was always present -cheering, encouraging, and celebrating each moment with them. His love, strength, and steady presence will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Barry will be remembered for his integrity, kindness, and the way he made others feel seen and supported. His legacy lives on in the lessons he taught and the love he shared.
He is survived by his loving wife, Paula; children, Hayley (David) Nichols and Mitchell (Finley) Turnbow; grandchildren, Turner and Scottie Nichols, and Kennedy, Harrison, and Taylor Turnbow; siblings, Ron (Judy) Turnbow, Jeff Turnbow, Russell (Sonya Gray) Turnbow, and Lisa Turnbow; brother-in-law, Dennis Knulf; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Debby Knulf.

Barry and I both graduated from Columbus High School in 1972. He was a wonderful person and great athlete. Ironically, we both were in McNutt Quad our freshman year at Indiana University. Barry’s passing really caught me by surprise because he looked very healthy when I saw him and Paula walking at Nexus Park a few weeks ago. My condolences to Paula and the rest of their family.
