James P. Willis

James P. “Jim” Willis, age 87, of Columbus, Indiana, passed away leaving behind a legacy as vibrant and detailed as the photographs he took. Truly “one in a million,” Jim was a remarkably caring, generous, and lovable man who spent his life helping others and bringing joy to everyone around him.

Born on February 25, 1939, in Franklin, Indiana, to the late James F. Willis and Carrie (Fateley) Willis, Jim grew up to graduate from Columbus High School in 1957.  He went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Army from 1962 to 1964.

Jim saw the world through a lens. For 40 years (1964–2004), he was the eye of the community as the dedicated photo editor for The Republic. Through his own business, Willis Photography, he became Columbus’s go-to wedding photographer. Jim had a rare gift for capturing love and milestone moments, freezing them in time for generations of families to cherish.

At home, Jim was a man of simple pleasures and deep passions. He could often be found listening to his favorite tunes by The Beatles, enjoying and organizing his coin collection, or unwinding with an episode of MASH* or The Three Stooges. Jim was an avid New York Yankees fan.  He had a tender heart for nature, finding peace in caring for his plants and watching his flowers bloom. His faith was also central to his life, and he was a long-time, devoted member of the Newburn United Methodist Church.

Above all, Jim’s heart belonged to his family. On March 24, 1968, he married his soulmate, Joyce Edwards. Together, they built a life rooted in love, laughter, and mutual devotion over 58 beautiful years of marriage.  Jim was affectionately know as Pop to Steve and Kari.

Jim’s legacy of kindness lives on through his beloved wife, Joyce Willis; his children, Steve Willis and Kari (John) Kerns; brother, W. Edward (Diane) Willis; and his grandchildren, Sean Kerns and Victoria Kerns, who brought immense pride to his life; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his brother, David F. Willis.

Jim was a bright light in Columbus, and his generous spirit and easy smile will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday, July 26, 2026, at the Jewell – Rittman Funeral Service & Crematory.  The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m., Monday, July 27, 2026.  Burial will follow in Garland Brook Cemetery.
