Kenneth Ralph Ritz, Sr., 99, of Columbus, IN, passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2026 at Millers Merry Manor in Hope, IN.  Ken was born on October 7, 1926 to Claude Ritz and Anna Jane Aikens Ritz. He married Carole June Bohall on August 9, 1948.

Ken was a proud World War II Navy veteran, and his service to his country remained an important part of his life.  In 2016 he had the honor of participating in the Indy Honor Flight, an experience that reflected the gratitude and respect he earned through his military service. He carried himself with quiet dignity and a strong sense of duty, qualities that stayed with him throughout his life and were evident to all who knew him.

Following his years of service, Ken built a steady and respected working life. He retired from Kenny’s Barber Shop on State St. at the age of 70, a testament to his strong work ethic and dedication. He was the kind of man who believed in staying active, staying useful, and taking pride in a job well done.

Ken was also a devoted supporter of Hauser Jets High School athletics. His enthusiasm for the team and its athletes was well known, and he was honored with a lifetime season pass for the basketball team, a recognition that reflected both his loyalty and his steady encouragement.

Ken was well known at the gym in Mill Race Center where he worked out almost every weekday and usually on every machine there.  He made many friendships with others that were inspired by his strong body and spirit.  He was surprised when they celebrated his 99th birthday with cake and balloons.

Outside of work and community involvement, Ken found joy in many pastimes. He was an avid golfer and achieved the memorable accomplishment of making a hole in one at both Par 3 and Greenbelt Golf Courses. His love of the outdoors included fishing and gardening and he embraced each of these interests with the same energy and enthusiasm he brought to every part of his life. He was especially passionate about gardening at the Columbus Community Garden, where his efforts were recognized by the Mayor, and he was honored with a Golden Carrot Award in 2012.

Above all, Ken will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He cherished his family and took great pride in the relationships he built and nurtured over the years. His life was one of steadfast love, quiet strength, and enduring devotion.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 19, 2026 at Jewell-Rittman Funeral Service & Crematory with Larry Perkinson officiating. Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home. Ken will be laid to rest beside his wife at Garland Brook Cemetery with military honors provided by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.
