Nelson Roberts, who was born on November 27, 1940, in Columbus, Indiana, to parents, Basil and Dollie Brand Roberts. Nelson passed away on July 2, 2026, in Stanton, Kentucky, leaving behind a life remembered for hard work, practical skill, and a deep appreciation for the simple things that made each day meaningful.
He lived his life with a steady hand and a determined spirit, and those who knew him will remember him as a man who was dependable, capable, and always willing to put in an honest day’s work. Nelson married the love of his life, Carol Shatto, on September 5, 1964. She passed away in 2015.
Nelson had many interests that reflected his love of the outdoors and his appreciation for traditional pastimes. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he found satisfaction in spending time in nature. Deer, squirrel, and rabbit hunting were among the activities he valued, and these pursuits were part of the rhythm of life he embraced. Nelson grew up in Brown County. His family farm is now known to many as the Horseman’s camp, located in Brown County State Park.
He was also known for his enjoyment of trading cars, a pastime that suited his practical nature and his eye for value. Nelson liked the process of making a deal, comparing what was useful, and finding something that fit his needs. Nelson had a very particular way when grooming his yard. He has a personal vengeance against all weeds. Even if it meant leaving a blank spot in the middle of the yard, a weed was not going to survive his meticulous manicure.
Nelson’s home life was also enriched by the companionship of his beloved pet cats, Tommy and Linx.
Those who knew Nelson will remember his straightforward manner, his resilience, and the quiet dignity with which he carried himself. He did not seek attention, but he earned respect through his actions and the consistency of his character. His life was very well lived. A hard-working man that others can only hope to be like in their future, Nelson will be greatly missed by his loving family.

I am sad that Nelson has passed. He was one of my first friends when I started school at Van Buren in Brown County. My husband Denny and I remained friends with Nelson down through the years. We liked KFC and Burger King and so did Nelson. Good memories. Sending my love and sympathy to all of Nelson’s family and friends.
