Paul Edwin Dettmer, passed away on May 7, 2026, in Columbus, Indiana, at the age of 82. He was born on June 26, 1943, in Columbus, Indiana, to the late Edwin and Alma Dettmer.
Paul retired after 40 years of dedicated service as a machine repairman with Cummins Engine Company in 2003. He took great pride in his work and was respected for his skill, reliability, and strong work ethic. His long career reflected the same qualities that defined his life, including perseverance, responsibility, and a willingness to help wherever he was needed. He was also a Navy veteran, and his service to his country was an important part of his life and identity.
Paul was a lifetime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church-White Creek, where his faith and fellowship were meaningful parts of his life. He also enjoyed motorcycles and was an active member of the Gold Wing Riders Association. Riding brought him joy, freedom, and friendship, and he appreciated the open road and the camaraderie that came with it. Whether working with his hands or spending time on his motorcycle, Paul found satisfaction in being active and engaged.
He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Harker and her husband Scot; his son, Joshua Dettmer and his wife Darshana; his brothers, Kenneth Dettmer and James Dettmer and his wife Sherri; his grandchildren, Jonah Harker, Avery Harker, and Jacob Dettmer; his stepson, James Essex; his stepdaughter, Teres Bingham; and his step-grandson, Evan Bingham. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gloria Jean Dettmer, and by his parents, Edwin and Alma Dettmer.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday May 12, 2026 in St. John’s Lutheran Church-White Creek with Pastor Jim Haugen officiating. Following the service, he will be laid to rest in the church cemetery beside his wife Gloria with military rites performed by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in Jewell-Rittman Funeral Service and Crematory and again on Tuesday at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church or St. John’s Lutheran School in memory of Paul.
