Richard “Dick” Perkins, 97, of Columbus, passed away on May 18, 2026 at Four Seasons. Dick was born on January 8, 1929, in Bedford, Ohio, the son of Kenneth W. Perkins and Kathryn (Lawler) Perkins.

He grew up in Dearborn, MI and served in the US Navy from 1951-1955. After his service, he graduated from Michigan Technological University with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering. His first job was with International Harvester in Fort Wayne, IN. This is where he met his wife of 65 years, Margaret Herzog. Dick was also employed at Trane Company in LaCrosse, WI. The family moved to Columbus in 1969. Dick retired from Cummins after 19 years.

Dick was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Mill Race Center, Golden K Kiwanis, Michigan Tech Alumni Association, and a charter member of the American Society for Metals.

After retirement, Dick and Margaret enjoyed traveling, especially to Elderhostels. They delivered Meals on Wheels and volunteered at Love Chapel for many years.

His greatest joy was spending time with family. He loved playing games with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dick enjoyed golf, bridge, reading, and word searches. He was known by his family and friends to be a kind, gentle person with a great sense of humor.

Dick is survived by his wife, Margaret; son, Tim, of Centerpoint, IN; daughters, Lisa Garvey, of Noblesville, IN, and Amy (Todd) Wingler, of Avon, IN; grandchildren, Courtney DeWeese, Sam Garvey, and Kayla and Connor Wingler; great-grandchildren, Hunter and Malayna DeWeese. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Steven; step-mother, Ethel Perkins; brother, Kenneth Perkins; and sister, Jean Lawrence.

The funeral will be at 12 pm on May 23, 2023 at Jewell-Rittman Funeral Service and Crematory with Pastor Tim Carter officiating. Calling hours will be held from 10:00 until 12:00 prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Peter’s Life Works Counseling Ministry, 719 5th St., Columbus, IN 47201, through St. Peter’s Lutheran Church or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
