Scott Shafter Henney

Scott Shafter Henney, 62, of Elizabethtown, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones on Friday, September 25, 2026.

Scott was born on August 17, 1964, to Jean S. Henney and Geraldine (Sheets) Henney.

Shortly before his 16th birthday, Scott suffered a spinal injury that changed his life forever. But Scott never allowed his injury to define him or slow him down. If someone told him he couldn’t do something, he was determined to prove them wrong. That determination, strength, and fearless spirit were hallmarks of who Scott was.

Scott was the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back—and then tell you how to put it on. He never backed down from a challenge and lived each day to the fullest. His quick wit, generous heart, and infectious love of life touched everyone who knew him.

Scott married the love of his life, Lorie Ann (Brinkley) Henney, and together they built a home filled with joy, love, and family. Scott was a devoted husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, brother, uncle, and godfather.

Scott was a hard-working and dedicated employee of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service until his retirement, where he made many lifelong friends. He found joy in the simple things in life. He enjoyed working on cars, relaxing to jazz music, drinking a crisp Mountain Dew and following motorsports. He especially looked forward to his yearly trips to the Indy 500 and took great pride in driving his beloved Corvette.

Above all else, Scott loved his family. Some of his happiest memories came from family trips to Mardi Gras and local theme parks. He loved sharing experiences with the people he cared about and was often the person who took someone to their first concert and their first theme park. His generosity and enthusiasm made him especially beloved by his 11 nieces and nephew.

Scott leaves behind a legacy of determination, laughter, generosity, and love that will live on through the many lives he touched.

Scott is survived by his wife, Lorie Henney; his son, Zachary (Sherrianna) Henney; his goddaughter, Laci Green; stepson, Adam Smith; stepdaughter, Amanda Smith; grandchildren, Theodore Henney, Charlotte Henney, Lexi Green, Jasmine Smith, Nicholas Smith, and Zoey Smith; his siblings, Kevin (Sue) Henney, Brian (Barbara) Henney, and Toni (Dennis) Wendel; and 11 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jean S. Henney and Geraldine Henney, and a brother Terry Henney.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, October 2, 2026, at Jewell-Rittman Funeral Service & Crematory. Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. until the time-of-service Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Garland Brook Cemetery.
